Roskilde and region mid Zealand
The forest, the fjord and the view
Ballooning in the region of Central Zealand is the ultimate combination of nature, city life and the most beautiful fjords. The flight area stretches from Roskilde down to Ringsted.
When flying in this region, it’s almost impossible to miss Roskilde Cathedral, which has been the burial church of the royal family for centuries and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the hot air balloon, the red brick cathedral with its two distinctive towers can be seen clearly, even from a distance.
In the wooded hill country of central Zealand, around Ringsted and Jystrup, we enter a more wooded area. Skjoldenæsholm Skovene is a private forest located in the hilly dead ice landscape formed during the last ice age. In the middle of the landscape we find Zealand’s second highest point (121.3 meters above sea level). Gyldenløves Høj is named after Frederik IV’s half-brother, Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, who owned Skjoldenæsholm around 1700. The small domed hill was artificially constructed to ensure that it was the highest point on Zealand. We’ll try to point it out if we fly over it, but we have to be low down to find it.

Roskilde Fjord is unique
Whenever possible, we always try to include the breathtaking Roskilde Fjord in our balloon flights. Roskilde Fjord is one of Denmark’s most beautiful and fascinating fjord landscapes, containing around 30 small islands and islets with a rich and largely undisturbed plant and animal life.
Did you know that one of the world’s smallest kingdoms is located in the middle of Roskilde Fjord? It’s called Elleore and most of all, it resembles a peaceful bird island when we hover over it. But don’t be fooled; the Kingdom of Elleore has a ruling couple, a kingdom council, ministers and its own laws. We like to point out the little kingdom from our hot air balloon, but we don’t land there, as it’s not easy to get back to land.
Balloons over Hedeland or Boserup Forest
Just west of Roskilde city, where the fjord stretches out, we find Boserup Forest – a very lush and hilly forest area. Beech is the most common tree here, and in spring the forest floor is covered with a wealth of flowers, including larkspur and anemones. The varied forest is home to many different birds, which we can observe from the hot air balloon as we fly low over the area.
Looking east, we first encounter Hedeland, a large recreational nature area, before we see the towers and tall buildings of Copenhagen. Køge Bugt and Stevns are always visible, and in this flight area there are often other air traffic using the runways at Roskilde Airport.
Typical starting locations on Mid Zealand
We can never decide on a take-off location before the actual flight day. This is because we need to know the wind directions before we can plan the flight. For balloon flights over Central Zealand, we typically use launch sites in Tølløse, Gevninge, Skibby, Roskilde, Lejre, Ishøj, Jystrup, Ringsted, Stenlille, Uggerløse and, when possible, even from central Copenhagen.

Hot air balloon flights take place either in the hours just before sunset or in the hours right after sunrise. During the flying season, the meeting and flight times will therefore vary according to the times of sunrise and sunset.

The chase vehicle follows the balloon on the ground and aims to arrive at the landing site shortly after the balloon has landed.
